How to Create Room Data Sheets in Revit

Room data sheets are used to convey the requirements of the client for a specific type of space to the design teams. They are typically designed during the meeting and architectural programming phases. The information they contain can include general requirements and guidance notes or detailed specifications for fixtures and finishes (F&F) and electrical and mechanical equipment.

The information is typically presented on a single sheet per room and hence the name. However, depending on what the work will be, it could be spread across more than one sheet. They are typically given to contractors along with the drawings and specs.

A variety of software is available to assist in the creation of RDSs. Certain software is designed to connect Revit models, so that the content of the model as well as the room data sheets are identical. This makes the document easier to manage and prevents duplicate entries in both.

Layer is a powerful tool to help with the management of room data. It has an easy-to use interface to capture room data and can generate multiple sheets for each space type. It is also able to backfill existing Revit projects with room types, and create custom reports. Layer allows the user also to define naming conventions and naming on sheets and to alter properties like scale, browser organisation, and naming.

The Layouts panel provides settings to determine the layout of views generated on a sheet including margin values as well as the location of the titleblock. The option to prevent view titles from estimating the size of the sheet’s total view can also be enabled. This will stop titles from obscuring views on the sheet, and will also allow more elevation views on a sheet.
