How to choose a school for logistics?
With a high demand for education that is focused on logistics, a few schools are designing programs specifically for rank-and-file warehouse employees. Companies want them to understand how their jobs impact customers and how what they do in one department can impact operations at other locations as well, says Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
The options for degrees vary, but most include foundation courses that cover basic concepts, like operations and supply chain management procurement, transportation, distribution networks as well as warehousing and inventory management, and business fundamentals. Some universities also offer specializations including e-commerce and retail logistics, logistics and transportation analysis, global logistics management, and others.
Graduates can be employed in roles as supply chain managers, logisticians, purchasing agents, industrial production managers, and distribution managers. They can also seek certifications such as the Certified Supply Chain Manager or the Certified Public Contract Manager to enhance their career opportunities.
In addition to the courses offered take into consideration whether the institution is accredited by a governing body such as the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation that recognizes 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. You should look for a school that has a good student-to-teacher-ratio, as this will ensure you get a quality education.
Some colleges offer hybrid or online programs that offer classroom instruction as well as virtual learning opportunities. This type of program may appeal to those who have the flexibility of their schedules or cannot take classes in a traditional manner. Some online-only courses offer associate degrees or certificates, while others provide master’s or bachelor’s degrees.
